Information about the site
Nice fairly intact wreck that was previously unknown but recently (end of 2009) identified by Göran Nilsson to probably be M/S Storö which disappeared sometime around 1985. She is located at Rindö and was found by chance by Therese Bejgarn and Andreas Flemström on 11 March 2007. Wooden hull with later added riveted sheet metal hull. Probably an old converted steamer that has been stripped, given a spark plug engine when converted to a cargo ship. None of the local residents have any memory of the boat, which was probably taken by the ice one winter (the masts fell and lashed and a long narrow crack in the hull).
The wreck lies right at Byviken's inlet, across the inlet. It is suggested that you enter the water from the jetty, and dive down along the rocks down to the bottom and swim outward along the rocks and the bottom. The wreck is only 2 m from the rocks, so you can hardly miss it as long as you are in contact with the rocks.
The wreck is 22.5 m long and 4 m wide.
There is also a car wreck outside the pier if you follow the stone edge about 5 minutes away from Trassel.
Visibility seems to be good most of the time (at least in the winter), and also there is some current in the water which cleans it pretty quickly if you happen to get silted up.
Access to the site
From Stockholm: drive E18 north towards Norrtälje. After approx. 18 km, turn off towards Waxholm (road 274) and continue all the way to Waxholm's ferry stop (straight road). Take the ferry over to Rindö, and continue on Rindövägen. After about 4 km, turn right onto Byviksvägen towards Byviken. Note that you drive around and under Rindövägen, so you will end up driving north - a so-called Spanish turn. Drive on this road all the way to the harbor in Byviken, and park appropriately.
